Have you been doing goofy things lately? Losing or forgetting things? Easily distracted? Yeah, me too. My daughter in L.A. calls it “Covid brain”. My brother and sister-in-law in New York use the same term, so, I guess it’s “a thing”. … Wow, I can’t stop thinking about yesterday’s news. Or today’s news, which makes me question the veracity of yesterday’s news … We’re all living in the midst of craziness and trying not to go crazy. (Excuse me, readers) “Sweetie, didn’t I already show you how to do that school assignment?”
The tiredness addressed in the last blog post is certainly a contributing factor. Perhaps the biggest cause is what I think of as the static in our lives and in our brains. Will anyone notice I’m wearing sweat pants and bunny slippers? Oh, never mind, I’m just writing at my laptop. This isn’t Zoom.
A few days ago, I came downstairs in the morning to find a burner of the stove left on warm and the back door unlocked. Covid brain! Three different people have told me this week that they can’t remember what day it is. Covid brain! On the subject of remembering, where did I leave my mask? I heard a funny story today—a boss wrote a paycheck to an employee and endorsed the back instead of signing the front. Covid brain!
How do we stay sane? Sometimes just taking a walk can clear our heads. Speaking of walking, please tell me that’s fog I see out there, not smoke. Sigh.
Here are some simple ideas for these complicated times:
First, let’s hang onto a sense of humor. At least we have an excuse for mental lapses right now!
Second, give yourself a little extra grace and extend that grace to those around you, too.
Lastly, take care of yourself and try to find ways to restore your sanity.
If you have a funny story of an incident caused by Covid brain, please share —we could all use a laugh. If you have some tips for staying sane, we’d love to read those, too.
Post Script – I understand that actually having COVID-19 can affect the functioning of the brain. My heart goes out to anyone dealing with those issues. This post is simply about the distraction of living in our chaotic, late 2020 world.
