The long Memorial Day weekend is here. It is, of course, a time to honor those who have sacrificed so much in the service of our country. For many people, this weekend is also the kick-off for summer. Pools are filled and barbeques are fired up. Students and teachers alike are finishing up final projects and anticipating a change of pace. Others are planning trips and weekend getaways. I’ve always felt that as vacation approaches, we become increasingly aware of the need for it. I know I’m ready!
There is a story—presumably a folk legend—about a man travelling in Africa. He was alone except for the porters who carried his supplies. The porters were fast and strong. They tirelessly forded rivers and climbed hills. Then one day, they simply sat down. The traveler was perplexed. The porters explained, “We have travelled many miles. Now it is time to stop and let our souls catch up.”
Don’t we feel that way sometimes? We all need time to rest, time to process all that has happened in our lives, and time to just be. As we head into this long weekend, and the summer season, I hope each of you will find time to rest and let your soul catch up.
“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
