Several years ago, a dear friend gave me a mug that says “All I want for Christmas is Peace on earth and really cute shoes!” It’s funny. And yet, somehow, I sensed it’s also profound. It made me think. You’re invited to add your thoughts in the comments section below.
The mug reminds me that navigating this season can be a balancing act. We balance lofty goals (“Peace on Earth”) with little wishes (“really cute shoes”.) We donate to charity and buy gifts while trying to keep our bank accounts balanced, too.
This season brings a cacophony of music. I love the variety of carols from around the world. There’s even something about “Run, Run, Rudolph” that makes me smile. But walking through a local store recently, the music was so cheesy I wondered how in the world we could hear echoes of the angels’ song over that.
I promised a short post, so here’s my conclusion. Let’s enjoy all that this season has to offer, but maintain our balance. Enjoy the carolers, the band concerts, the ringing bells—and find enough quiet to listen for the angels. Buy someone (or yourself) cute shoes if you want—but don’t let Prince of Peace get lost in the wrapping paper and bows. For the Promised One is here—Immanuel, God with us.
